Transforming STEAM Education in Qatar
Studio 5 — an initiative by the Digital Society Sector at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology — is a community platform that offers technology and allied equipment support for hands-on learning opportunities. It aims to nurture a new generation of learners by developing their digital skills, which is vital as they grow up within in an all-pervasive digital environment.
As part of this initiative, we developed the Studio 5 PD Session Program to foster professional growth among educators in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) fields by providing comprehensive training and skill development — enabling them to integrate advanced technologies into their teaching methodologies.
Overview and Objectives
The PD Session Program supports the broader goal of transforming Qatar’s educational landscape through the effective integration of digital fabrication and emerging technologies. The program targets educators across various age groups and educational stages, from primary school to higher education. It aims to equip them with the skills necessary to teach students aged 7-24 effectively. It is facilitated by a diverse team of experts, including Senior Education Specialists, Edu-Tech Engineers, Project Managers, and BioEdu-Tech Designers. This multidisciplinary team brings a wealth of knowledge and practical experience to the training sessions.
Program Offerings
The PD Session Program encompasses a wide range of topics, each designed to address different aspects of technology integration in education. These sessions include:
-
Mixed Reality as an Educational Tool
Educators learn about the basics of virtual reality (VR) and how to create VR characters and environments using Cospace. They explore the diverse applications of mixed reality in various teaching subjects.
-
Machine Learning as an Educational Tool
This session covers the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Educators learn how to operate AI tools and their applications across disciplines, gaining insights into training machines and using online AI software.
-
App Coding for Educators
Educators are introduced to block coding and the Thunkable platform. They learn the basics of app development and how to incorporate coding into their educational methodologies.
-
Basic Electronics and Soldering for Educators
This session teaches the basics of electronics, including sensors, inputs, and outputs. Educators practice soldering and creating interactive circuits, learning how to use electronic tools to explain complex concepts in physics and maths.
-
2D Drawing and Laser Cutting for Educators
Educators learn to use 2D drawing programs and convert vector files for laser cutting. This session covers the process of 2D design and digital fabrication, enabling educators to create prototypes and tools for classroom use.
-
3D Modeling and 3D Printing for Educators
This workshop introduces educators to 3D modelling programs like Tinkercad and the use of 3D printers. Educators learn to create and fabricate 3D objects that can serve as educational tools.
-
Biotechnology as an Educational Tool
Educators gain knowledge on using biotechnology in science classes. They learn to set up DIY bio labs, grow living organisms, and use innovative equipment like bacterial incubators and digital microscopes.
-
Biomaterials for Educators
This session explores creating bioplastics and sustainable materials. Educators learn to implement sustainability in design by using up-cycled materials and creating innovative educational tools.
Achievements
Since its inception, Studio 5 has significantly impacted the educational community in Qatar, reaching 17,583 makers and developing essential tech skills through interactive learning and creativity. Over five months, the first PD session, held on October 5, 2023, saw participation from 82 educators. These sessions have successfully equipped educators with the knowledge and tools necessary to transform their teaching methods and better engage their students.
Impact
Studio 5’s PD Session Program for Educators exemplifies a successful model for professional development in the STEAM fields. By providing educators with practical training in cutting-edge technologies, the program not only enhances their teaching capabilities but also prepares them to inspire and engage the next generation of innovators.
Educators have highlighted the practical applications of the training, noting improvements in their ability to incorporate advanced technologies into their teaching. They have particularly appreciated the hands-on approach, which has enabled them to understand and apply complex technological concepts in a classroom setting.
Through continuous collaboration with educational institutions and research centres, Studio 5 is driving a significant shift in Qatar’s educational landscape, from traditional learning to a focus on creativity, innovation, and technological integration.
